In a world of gods, dwarves, and giants, Das Rheingold (The Gold from the Rhine) sets the stage for Wagner’s epic masterwork, The Ring Cycle, a saga of godly battles, family drama, and the power to rule the world.

The story begins when the dwarf Alberich renounces love and steals the magical gold guarded by three Rhine nymphs. From this gold, he has a ring forged, which will give him dominion over the world. Wotan, the ruler of the gods, lusts after the ring and breaks his own laws to obtain it. Alberich puts a curse on the ring, which sets into motion the rest of the saga.

The story is brought to life through the interweaving of distinct musical catchphrases (known as leitmotifs) that represent each character. Experience this groundbreaking “total work of art” which fully integrates music, words, drama, costume, and set design in a sweeping, intense marathon of sight and sound that paved the way for modern-day fantasy tales like The Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Star Wars, and more. Nobody is safe until the gold is returned to the Rhine. Don’t miss this once-in-a-lifetime production with Dayton Opera and the Dayton Philharmonic.

A beautiful sorceress, Alcina lures men to her enchanted island for love, only to turn them into objects or animals when she tires of them. Her current obsession is the knight Ruggiero, a young man who under her spell has forgotten about his fiancée Bradamante. Bradamante, disguised as her own brother, arrives on the island determined to rescue Ruggiero. The plot thickens when Alcina’s sister, who is betrothed to someone else, falls in love with the “brother.” The story proceeds with typical Baroque complicated twists and turns in a dramatic rendering about the differences between real love and fantasy infatuation. Moral behavior will win out before Alcina adds more trophies to her domain.

The third of Handel’s operas to be based on the epic poem Orlando furioso (with Orlando and Ariodante), Alcina debuted at the Covent Garden Theatre in London in 1735 to great acclaim. Just a few of the exquisite arias are the famous “Tornami a vagheggiar,” “Verdi prati,” and “Ah, mio cor.” The opera is considered today to be one of the greatest of the composer’s. A moving story of love’s fickleness and faithfulness, Alcina features some of Handel’s most alluring music.

Performed in Italian with English Supertitle

An operetta composed by Leonard Bernstein.
Lyrics by Wilbur, Sondheim, LaTouche, Parker, and Hellman.

University Opera Theatre
University Symphony Orchestra
Kenneth Kiesler, conductor
Matthew Ozawa, director

Adapted from the 1759 novella by Voltaire, this satirical and comic operetta follows good-natured, naïve young Candide on his adventures across the globe. Through war, natural disasters, and other trials, the ever-optimistic Candide and his companions cling to the philosophy that they live in “the best of all possible worlds,” even when reality threatens to teach them otherwise. Candide takes us on a wildly buoyant journey, reminding us that by cultivating “our very own garden,” we have the power to create a world we wish to live in.

Our production celebrates the 100th birthday of American composer Leonard Bernstein, whose musical compositions are renowned for brilliantly uniting diverse musical styles. Candide, first conceived in 1953 by playwright Lillian Hellman, has gained enormous popularity having been performed by opera and musical theatre companies alike. While the show has undergone numerous revisions and incantations such as the 1988 Scottish Opera Version (which U-M will perform), Candide features Bernstein’s most inventive and melodic score, including such favorites as “Glitter and Be Gay” and “Make Our Garden Grow.” In collaboration with the Departments of Theatre & Drama and Musical Theatre, this unique production is sure to be filled with raucous entertainment and exceptional emotional power.
